How Lexicon Earth handles data in your browser, what third parties may see when you look up a word, and disclosures required for advertising.
Effective date: 11 October 2026 · Last updated: 11 October 2026
Summary
- Lexicon Earth does not require an account.
- Word lineages you load are stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB).
- Live lookups contact public dictionary APIs and may load fonts / 3D libraries from CDNs.
- If advertising is enabled on this site, third parties including Google may use cookies or similar technologies to serve and measure ads.
Information stored on your device
Local cache
When a lookup succeeds, Lexicon Earth stores the resulting record in IndexedDB on your device (word forms, map coordinates, citations, and related metadata). You can export, import, or clear this cache from the About dialog in the atlas.
Service worker & offline assets
After your first visit, a service worker may cache the app shell, map GeoJSON, and some CDN assets so the atlas can reload offline. This cache is managed by your browser; clearing site data removes it.
Preferences
UI preferences such as the multi-source toggle may be remembered for the session or in local browser storage.
Information sent over the network
When you search online, your browser requests data from third-party services. Those services receive standard request data (IP address, user agent, the word or page title requested, and similar technical metadata) under their own policies:
- Wikimedia / Wiktionary privacy policy
- Wikidata (Wikimedia)
- Kaikki.org / Wiktextract hosts (when multi-source assist is enabled)
- Font and script CDNs used by the site (for example Google Fonts and jsDelivr for three.js)
Lexicon Earth does not operate a first-party analytics backend. If analytics or advertising scripts are added later, this policy will be updated to name them.
Cookies and similar technologies
The core atlas can run without first-party advertising cookies. Your browser may still store local data as described above.
Third-party CDNs and dictionary APIs may set or read cookies or use local storage according to their policies when your browser contacts them.
Advertising
This site may use Google AdSense or similar advertising partners to display ads.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
Users may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. Alternatively, you can opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising by visiting www.aboutads.info.
For more about how Google uses data when you use partners’ sites or apps, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, a consent management platform may be shown before personalized ads are served, where required by law.
Children
Lexicon Earth is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices
- Use the atlas offline for cached words only (disable network, or rely on the service worker after first load).
- Clear cached lineages via About → Clear cache, or clear site data in your browser settings.
- Block third-party cookies or use browser tracking protections; some live lookups or ads may then be limited.
- Opt out of personalized Google ads via the links above.
Data retention
Local cache remains until you clear it or your browser evicts it. Lexicon Earth does not maintain a server-side copy of your search history.
International visitors
Because dictionary APIs and CDNs are global, request metadata may be processed in countries other than your own. Advertising and consent tools, if enabled, follow the configuration available in those products for your region.
Changes to this policy
We may update this page when features, vendors, or legal requirements change. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
